8 Tips for Naturally Straight Hair

Having naturally straight hair raises the jealousy for many thinking that it is easy to maintain and take care of. But truth be told, natural straight hair has a fair share of problems and maintenance needed.

As chic as it could look when cared for and style right, it does have it’s moments of looking flat, greasy and lifeless as well.

Fret not! We are here to give out some tips you could make good use of from the comfort of your own home.

1. Stick to a Shampoo Schedule

Apart from choosing the right shampoo that is best suitable for your hair, one thing most people forget is to have a regular shampoo schedule.

With straight hair, it is best advised to shampoo your hair every other day. This keeps you from the risk of your hair strands drying out.

Shampooing your hair with a cleansing shampoo can prevent your hair from looking flat and weighed down too.

2. Cautious Hair Conditioning

Unlike curly hair, straight hair has a boost of moisture by nature.

One of the more common mistakes made is excessive moisture in hair. This could be caused by the selection of conditioner, or just by overdoing it in general.

It would be best to consult your stylist to better advise you on the type of conditioner that is best suitable for your hair condition to avoid making such mistakes.

3. Avoid Hot Water

Don’t we all just love hopping in a hot shower? Don’t worry, me too!

As comforting as it sounds, it does make a huge difference in your scalp.

Hot water expands your pores stripping away the natural oils in your scalp, leaving your scalp dry and flaky and causing damage to your cuticles.

If you need a hot shower, you can prevent this from happening by rinsing with cold water after.

Alternatively, you could shower with lukewarm water. It is gentle on the hair and scalp, and you can easily avoid your scalp drying and flaking up and also dry and brittle hair!

How to condition straight hair: Start by applying your hair conditioner from the bottom, slowly working your way up by combing your hair with your fingers.

Hair conditioner is never meant for the scalp for all hair types.

4. Avoid Brushing Wet Hair

Did you know? Brushing straight hair right out of the shower can hurt your hair? This could cause your hair to stretch and break easily.

Try running your fingers through your hair first, then using a wide-toothed comb to finish it off to avoid any damage to your hair!

5. Using a Paddle Brush

Have you ever noticed the wide variety of hair brushes and combs available in stores? Every brush has its’ rightful owner to it!

When brushing your hair, it is important to use the right brush and we got you covered on this note.

It is best advised to use a Paddle Brush when brushing straight hair. Paddle Brushes have more bristles which helps with quicker detangling.

Tip: If you are afraid of the messy after shower combs, try brushing your hair first before hopping into the shower!

6. Avoid High Heat Settings

High heat settings is not good for the hair in general, but we also need it to style and dry our hair regardless.

To prevent any further potential damage, finish off your styling and drying with the cool air settings of your hair dryer to cool off your hair!

7. Trim Split Ends

Straight Hair

Don’t we all just hate it when the split ends just start forming up?

Straight hair is more prone to split ends and it is highly advisable to get it trimmed every 4-6 weeks to keep that fresh look!

8. Battling Frizz

Frizz can easily happen to your hair due to natural causes – Humidity and Weather Conditions.

How do we tackle it? Apply dry oil! What is a dry oil you may ask.

Dry oil is an oil to lock in moisture that does not appear to be as greasy, and tackle the frizz you have going on. Choosing the right dry oil can help protect your scalp from UV light!
